Sightsee and explore the world through a study abroad program

Service Learning & Study Abroad Opportunities

Studying abroad takes learning to another level. Whether you’re interested in international service learning or immersing yourself in another culture, you can make the most of your college experience through Chemeketa’s programs.

Chemeketa currently offers two service learning abroad programs to Nicaragua and Mexico, and one study abroad program to Japan. If you would like to pursue a different study abroad program, you can consult with Teter Kapan, Director of International Programs, to see how it would fit into your academic goals. Her contact information can be found here.

    Health & Hope Across Borders

Don’t have plans for spring break? Join Chemeketa’s team to Nicaragua this school year! Expect a rewarding trip that mixes study, service, and travel. You will spend winter term studying International Development, and then travel to an AMOS compound in Managua, Nicaragua over spring break. While in Nicaragua, students will do health-related service in the local villages with AMOS. The Nicaraguan based humanitarian agency provides health services and health education and has built strong community ties that have endured over many years. Expect to build relationships with the locals while assembling water filters, eating community dinner, and playing games with the children.

This program requires enrollment in HUM120 for the winter term. You’ll learn about international studies, community development and international health during six Saturday classes throughout the term, then put what you study in class to use improving the health of people in need abroad.

    Cost

The total cost of the program is $2,200*, which includes deposit, tuition, air, lodging, meals, project fees, insurance and bus transportation.

    Education Across Borders

Learn about global issues and international development, with focus on education as community empowerment! Then travel to Oaxaca, Mexico to put theory into practice by building schools and serving kids in a very poor community near the city dump. It’s an eye-opening experience that will challenge your thinking and awareness! Participate in Spanish classes and put your new skills to use every day—it’s the best way to really learn a language. Also, experience the fascinating culture of Oaxaca, including climbing the pyramids at the ruins of Monte Alban, seeing the traditional arts of rug weaving and pottery, and we all live in an old hacienda family home together. Expect a rewarding trip that mixes study, service, and travel. This is an excellent opportunity for future teachers, and anyone who wants to gain deep understanding of global issues and participate in meaningful community service. Students will work with a Salem-based humanitarian agency called Friends of Pimpollo that provides educational services and scholarships in Mexico. Check them out on the web: www.friendsofpimpollo.org.
