Choosing key words - page 1

When you want to find something on the World Wide Web, one of the most useful tools is called a search engine. There are many search engines such as Alta Vista, Google, and Lycos. When you search the Web, you enter (type) a word or words into a search field.

Your Web searches will be much more successful when you spend a little time thinking about the "key words" that you will use to search.

For exampe, if you are interested in trees what do you think will happen if you search for the word "trees?" You can imagine how many results you might get...millions--you probably won't find the best Web sites with this method.

Just for fun, let's give that search a try in Google to see what happens. Try clicking the "Google Search" button to see how many "hits" (results) are returned. Note: this will load a list of results in this lower frame, to continue the tutorial, click the [2] link in the top frame.

Write down the number of results returned when you search for "trees". You will find this information in the blue bar near the top of the Google page.
