New Tools for Voice and Video

The following are Web sites that allow you to communicate in various ways with your students. With the exception of Wimba, which is a service that Chemeketa Community College has purchased, all of the tools mentioned here are free.

Audio Tools

Horizon Wimba: This service offeres a suite of “voice tools” which can be added to Web pages or integrated with a course management system such as Blackboard’s e-learn.

Wimba’s tools include a threaded voice discussion board and voice email functions.

YackPack: This oddly named service provides a unique interface for providing asynchronous voice discussions for groups.

Other Voice communication sites worth looking at include:

Odeo: http://odeo.com/ (voice email)

Vaestro: http://vaestro.com/ (voice board)

VoiceThread: http://voicethread.com/about/empowering/

Video Tools:

Viddler: This service allows you to record, share and comment on videos online using only a simple Web camera. Perhaps the greatest strength of this site is the user’s ability to comment on a video at a specific place in the timeline.

I’ve created a short Viddler tutorial here: http://newterra.chemeketa.edu/faculty/vanslyt//computerskills/tutorials/viddler.swf
