Audacity Practice Exercise

You can complete this exercise even if you don't have a microphone, though you will need speakers or headphones. This exercise assumes that you have already downloaded and installed Audacity. If not you can return to the main page to find links and directions how to do so. (go to main page now).

Follow these steps to complete the exercise:

  1. Download the practice audio file to your desktop: 12435.mp3 (note: right-click on the file and select Save Target AS, otherwise your browser may simple play the file using an audio player).
  2. Open Audacity
  3. Go to the Project menu and choose Import
  4. Select the practice file "12435.mp3" from the desktop to import
  5. Play the audio file using the play button
  6. Use your mouse to select the word "four" from the audio waveform
  7. Go to the Edit menu and choose Cut
  8. Place the cursor after the word "three"
  9. Go the Edit menu and choose Paste
  10. Listen to the audio again
  11. Go to the File menu and choose Export as MP3
  12. Save the file as 1234.mp3
