How do the field trips work?
These interactive lectures give you the instructor's insights and set up the field trips to other colleges and universities on the topic for the week. Each week you will be asked to report on a minimum of 3 field trips.

Have you even been in a boring lecture, where the prof spent a lot of time on stuff you already knew and not enough time on what you needed to know? Well, here is your chance to change this. You can choose the field trips that you need. You are responsible for the concept of the week, however, you gather the information. You can choose the order that interests you most.

Survey the field trips that you are curious about or that you need. These are external links - away from Chemeketa. You may not always be able to get there, depending upon how busy the site is. Don't worry. There are alternative ways to gather the information. Don't get frustrated; come back and try later.

If there is a broken link (you get 404ed), let me know immediately. Web addresses change frequently.I update the links weekly. Remember this, if you jump ahead. I double check the links for the next week on Saturdays. If you jump ahead, some of the links may not work.

How to go on a field trip

Bookmark (favorites) your class site before you go, so you can come directly back to class.
Click on your field trip link (underlined URL - web address). The name is red and should appear on the page when you arrive, so you know that you are in the right place.
Visit and explore the link. Take notes on any new material or print off some of the handouts. If you find the field trip very helpful with lots more information, you might want to bookmark it as well, so you can come back here later for research for projects. Finding good sites is half the battle; the other half is remembering where they are! If you copy the URL (Web address) you can paste it right in your report and it will automatically become a link. This way other students reading your report can click and get to the same site that you are reporting on.

How to get back to class:

If you bookmarked the study skills class before you left, simply go to the bookmark menu and select the class.
You can use the back button to back up one step at a time until you come back to class. You'll be surprised how far you have roamed!
You can use the Go button (Netscape) or History to see where you have been. This way you can jump back to class, by skipping over the other sites, and just select the class again. Go reminds me of the bread crumbs in Hansel and Gretel, because "go" keeps track of where you wander.

Field trips take time. You don't have to do them all at once, but you do have to allow for online time to go on a field trip. Report on all three field trips in one message. You may write these in a word processor and copy and paste into the field trip conference message. Don't worry about formatting. The message area is NOT a word processor, so bold and italics, will not copy. Or you may type your report directly in the message area.

Criteria for grading Field Trips:

The field trips will be graded on a scale of 1 to 4, similar to GPA grading. Here is the criteria for each number:

1 = Done, but incomplete. This happens when students do not combine all 3 field trips into one report. You may go on the field trips individually, but to report, combine all three into one. Then you can add others as you find them.

2 = Competent. Students received this grade when they report on the main ideas and details that they found in the field trips. This is competent, but does not show any learning. It does show reading comprehension, so students have fulfilled the first part of study skills, which is knowing what to do, but it doesn't show the second part and that is doing it.

3 = Better. Discusses the main ideas and details in terms of how it would apply (or not apply) to your own study strategies. Students demonstrate how they will apply what they are learning.

4 = Aced it! Includes all of the above and adds creativity and insight.

Bonus points will be given for adding new field trips on the topic of the week.
