Crisis Intervention
Weeks Nine

The material covered during these couple of weeks are some current theories underlying the trend of violence in relationships and community. We will also be discussing these assignments during the face to face class on December 1st and putting some of the theory to work with scenarios.

Activities for Week Nine
  • Reading:
    • Refer to Week Eight for book chapters and web sites

  • Participation: Assault / Potential Violence / Power & Control Exercise:
    • Week 9 Activity #1 will be found in Sport Discussion Groups on the Web Board.
    • In the following scenarios, I would like you to put yourself in the shoes of the identified person. Please identify some of the feelings and reactions that you might have in this scenario and reflect about what you might need from others, like EMS.
Example scenario: You are a parent who has a 16 year old child who has just been expelled from school because there were street drugs found in her/his locker.

My response: I would be angry, disappointed and probably very frustrated that this child has not listened to our discussions about drugs & goals and how easy it is to ruin your life. I would also probably be uncertain about how to handle the confrontation with the child - especially what limits to set or if further punishment is necessary. I would appreciate having someone who would listen and help me work through options. I would also need to have someone who understood the intensity of feelings.

    • Jennifer was coming home late after work and stopped by the mall to do some shopping. As you put the keys in the lock to open the apartment door, you feel someone from behind forcing you through the door into the apartment. What might some of the thoughts and feelings be? He then grabs you, turns you to face him, shaking and slamming your body against the back of the door. You were then beaten and threatened with a knife and told that if you didn't cooperate, you would be killed. Then the assailant raped you before he left. What might your reactions be? What would you need from EMS responders?

    • What would it be like to be a 35 year old man with a history of schizophrenia that has been well managed but all of a sudden you are experiencing great anxiety which is resulting in all of the horrible symptoms coming back. You have a family consisting of a wife and 2 children, own your home in the suburbs and are a well respected middle management officer. You have called 911 because the hallucinations have become overwhelming this afternoon and you have become dangerous to yourself.

    • What would it be like to have your 7 year old daughter come home from a weekend away with friends. She tells you that a friend of yours, her friend's daddy, touched her in her privates. ?? What might your reactions be? What would you say to your spouse? Your daughter? What would you need from EMS responders?

    • Sally is visiting her mother, in another city. Mother calls 9-1-1 when Sally refused to go to the ER on her own. She has had profuse vaginal bleeding since she arrived last night at her mom's. Sally seems distant and is unwilling to talk to her mother about what is going on. What mom does see is how pale Sally has become this morning and how weak she is trying to move around the house. Sally's husband is a well respected doctor but Sally refused to let her mother call him for a consult. As EMS starts to evaluate Sally, there are multicolored bruising all around her torso. Sally says she is very clumsy but she allows the EMS to continue their evaluation. What does Sally need from EMS responders?

  • Quiz:
    • Discuss the following questions in your personal conference on the Web Board as they relate to the information that you find on the www.rainn.org web site. At the center of the issue of assault and abuse are Control and Power.
      1. What are some ways to protect yourself or maybe your child from sexual abuse?
      2. What are some things that you learned from this site that could be helpful to you in the future as you provide health care to others?
      3. What are some ways to preserve evidence of an assault?
      4. What is your understanding of how the concepts of control and power are the core of the violence in relationships of many kinds?
