Crisis Intervention Week Eight Assault Cycles / Personal Violence
This week's focus surrounds the topic of violence to us, to others and to those we serve in the health care field. It is a huge issue and we will not be able to cover the topicsin depth in the time allotted for this class. Our focus will be on the intervention - how to respond to people in these situations that will benefit them in the long haul and how to help them feel some safety, in the midst of all their fear.

"Thank God I watched that (TV) show or I would not be here today . . . .Thank you, RAINN, for making it possible for me to leave that place where you can't remember, but can't forget." From a 46 year-old woman who had recently been raped. She called the RAINN hotline after seeing a RAINN ad on TV. |

As your text states, "You can have a tremendous influence on the patient's decisions and therefore, on the patient's ultimate recovery from the emotional trauma of assault." (Pg 64) This can seem overwhelming to you, the responder, and that is why we will work through some scenarios and discuss what might work.
In the last few weeks, you have listed types of pain / you have discussed what triggers you can identify for yourself as well as others / you have looked at stressors and how they affect you and others in a health care provider profession / you have discussed how and why of the importance of talking with all the players involved in a scenario / and you are discovering some of the issues that cause barriers in communication (language, age, mental illness, alcohol or drug misuse, fear, hopelesssnesss etc)
In these next couple of weeks we will continue to explore ways to understand the emotional as well as physical impact of assault. There have been various thoughts about the factors causing assault / abuse, but the most prevalent theory currently involves the issues of power and control.

As you read the assignment from the Web Site child-abuse.com, you will discover the vicious cycle of violence that people get caught into.
Study the models presented of 'Who is the Batterer' and 'Who is the Battered Spouse.'

We will be discussing these models in class on Friday, December 1st.
And of course, what effect does all this violence and lack of respect to self and others have on the children. Refer to the next image for one author's description. This is where programs of intervention and prevention can hold a key to change. Please look at the accumulation of the programs that you found and explained on the web board. You folks did an awesome job with that task!
