Crisis Intervention
Week One
Introduction

There are many ways to define Crisis Intervention. For the purpose of this class we will develop a definition that incorporates three main focuses: 1) the participants Self-Care, their ability to maintain a Healthy Balance in their life and develop a sense of resiliency, 2) Interpreting Behavior and Needs of those people in crisis, and 3) Finding ways to Respond to people in crisis effectively.

The first three weeks will work through the aspects of self-care, maintaining a healthy balance in one's life and developing a sense of resiliency. This will include the face-to-face class on Sept. 29, 2006 on campus where we will review some of your finished work and engage in some scenario based activities.

The Health Care professions are currently confronted with many stressors such as financial pressures, legal issues, constant changing technology, time constraints, mass casulties and terrorism. Overall goals in the National Emergency Medical Technician educational programs are to prepare the student with the art and science of how to care for others. The goals also include how to maintain the individuals own health and resiliency to stay in the profession.

There will be articles assigned in addition to the text that have been chosen to assist to broaden your thinking about job related stressors and coping skills. Look for a specific activity associated with the articles that will be described in the Week Two assignments.

It will be discovered that I have chosen articles from many health care professions (this is a team effort) and some more research based (research adds validity). In order to gain the most from the discussion groups on the web board, each of you should read your article, review the topic of the week as it relates to the article information and then come to class or the Web Bd prepared to discuss your information.
