Online Openness

Nearly all classes at Chemeketa that are online, hybrid, or web-infused use the classroom management system Elearn. While this system has certain advantages, I strongly urge the faculty and administration to reduce our dependence on this system. I minimize using this system for the following reasons:

  • I routinely receive inquiries from prospective students about my classes. The best way for someone to learn about a class is to be able to look at the web site freely and immediately. In Elearn, the students must enroll to gain access. They must purchase the product before they know what it is they are purchasing!

  • I share my work with colleagues at other institutions. It is extremely awkward to do so when all the work is on a closed system. We are also operating under a double standard when we routinely direct students to web pages at other institutions.

  • I hope to share my work with people in the local community and the world. We serve the public, not just the students in our classes.
