Discussion

Here are Week 9's discussion questions. You could probably write a better chapter on Distance Learning than the book! So the questions will look at what makes a good online class from your point of view.

What makes a good online class from your point of view?

What makes a good textbook for an online class?

What makes a poor online class?

What do students need to know about taking an online class in order to be successful?

What do teachers need to know in order to design a successful online class?

Give us your ideas and observations in the conference in Week 8 discussion.

TRG = Textbook Reading Guide

See TRG, your Textbook Reading Guide, who will tell you what pages to read in your textbook. This week is the Internet and all of you have already been there! Let's see if your experience corresponds with what the author says in the text!

Activities

NETS

I will be asking you to synthesize and categorize this material to turn in

Here's a sample from a previous term:

Danielle’s Standards for Technology use in the classroom:

1) Teachers should be able to use current technology and should be able and willing to learn new technology.

  • I learned how to more aptly use Microsoft Excel. With Microsoft Excel I learned how to use several buttons that I had not used before, these buttons did and will help shorten the time I need to accomplish tasks in that program.
  • I learned how to better use Quick books pro. I learned how to file bills on the program, and how to print checks on the program.

2) Teachers should be able to plan and put to use technology infused, educational curriculum that will be able to keep the children’s attention.

  • I found a site, http:// www.aplusmath.com, which reinforces math skills.
  • The Roblyer CD is a good source of new ideas that I can incorporate into my teaching. Many of these ideas are interactive and will keep my students’ attention.
  • I learned how to do a web quest.

3) Teachers should be able to use technology to effectively teach children from diverse backgrounds.

  • I can use projects, such as those from the Roblyer CD, to teach my students about other culture and thereby encourage acceptance in my classroom and I can use diversity among my students to help encourage these projects.

4) Teachers should evaluate all technology they put to use to determine if it is safe and helpful and to determine if it is the best program for what is desired.

  • I have designed a graph that will help evaluate the technology that I wish to bring into the classroom.

5) Teachers should be able to teach children at least rudimentary skills such as use of a computer and calculator (this implies that they should know how to use them well enough that they can explain them).

  • I learned how to set up a new printer my mother bought, this is not to say I could set one up on my own, but I do know more about what goes where and what is really necessary in the instructions.
  • I learned how to put header and footers into my papers.
  • I learned how to use the paragraph button. *which by the way is rather annoying to write with. It shows you where you put paragraphs and where you have extra spaces, it is handy but annoying.

6) Teachers should use technology to keep in touch with the parents of their students.

  • By using databases and word processors, I can cut down on the time it takes to write up and send a letter; this time saved can be used to send letters more often because it will not take hours at a time to write up a letter.
  • I learned how to set up a website that the parents can access and see what we are doing in class as well as where they can receive information about class.

7) Teachers should use technology to empower their students.

  • Google, onelook.com, and other similar site allow me (a teacher) to help my students open a whole new world thought the internet.

8) Teachers should encourage healthy use of technology.

  • I learned to make an acceptable use policy.

9) Teachers should create an environment in which technology can effectively enhance learning.

  • I learned how to make quizzes on quia and other sites. I can use these to test the children’s knowledge of the material.

10) Teachers should ensure equal time is given to minorities and females and special needs children.

  • I can use Excel to monitor how much time each student is using the computer and plan more time for those who are not getting enough.

Bibliography

In the final product you will need to categorize your findings. Some have quiz sites, classroom materials, student sites, teacher resources, etc.

Then for each site listed, you need a sentence describing how you would use this site, what grade level, is it for students, parents or teachers? Something that would help you remember why you listed this site or resources. So when you get into the classroom and you want some resources you will have some information on each of the ones that you chose. That way you won't have to look up each site in order to remember what it was that interested you.

Web Resources

Search Engine for Children - Yahooligans: the Web Guide for Kids. This is the only one that I would use in the classroom with children.

Google with a quote and graphics - Boogle

Have some fun and find your street location with the new LOCAL at Google. You must drag the state you are looking at to the middle of the page and just click on the plus sign for close up views. Remember to drag each view to the middle of the page to zoom in to your area.

If you want to see what your house is worth and see the map of your neighborhood, use ZILLOW. Don't ask me what it stands for! Type in your address and you can see your house and the neighborhood values as well.
