Practicum Orientation

All of us have attended school as students, and it's easy to think that we know what we need to know to work there as adults.  This is not necessarily true, however, and in this day and age not just anyone can waltz into a classroom to observe or work with students.  Schools have a culture, and understanding that culture -the beliefs, skills, values and attitudes that are necessary to work successfully with students-  is a necessary part of your exploration of this field.

The ED100 orientation will provide some guidelines for a successful practicum experience.  We will conduct an informal assessment of the skills necessary to secure a practicum placement, and will role-play the kinds of interactions you are likely to have with school personnel. Below are some questions that will help you determine if you need to attend and tell you how you should prepare.

Who should come?

Attendance at the orientation is required for students who are...

  • enrolled in ED100
  • residents of Marion, Polk or Yamhill Counties
  • not current school district employees or regular public school volunteers

When and where will the orientation be held?

  • 6:30 PM, Thursday, April 6, 2006
  • Chemeketa Salem Campus, Building 1 Room 200 (right above the bookstore)

What should I bring?

  • Come dressed as you would be for a field experience at a school site.
  • Come prepared to answer the following questions in a brief interview:
    • What experiences have you had that make you think you might be an effective educator?
    • How can you help students to be successful?
    • What are your goals for the field experience portion of this class?

What should I do if I have questions about the orientation?

  • Please contact Mark Rediske at Chemeketa's Salem Campus
