- Welcome to Ed 100,
Introduction to Education
Before you get started, let me share a few tips about online classes
in general and WebBoard in particular.
Be
prepared to spend 3-4 hours for each of the seminars to complete the
course requirements. This is roughly equivalent to the time that would
be required for the same course delivered face-to-face. In
this class, you also have field experience, which requires 3 hours
volunteering in the public schools.
It
is helpful if you have basic understanding of computers before you
begin the class so that you do not get bogged down in the technology,
which is supposed to help rather than hinder.
Stay
in close communication with me throughout the term. If you have general
questions or comments use the ??? for
Instructor. I check this
conference first. It is a public conference so everyone can see my
responses. (Someone else might have the same question!) If you have
a private request or question, post this in your private conference.
The
"Alerts and Announcements"
conference (also in Webboard) is where I will post any important information,
news or updates. Check it whenever you see there is a new message.
Seminars
are posted on Sundays, and assignments are due by
midnight Saturday. As per the syllabus, full points will only be awarded
to assignments posted by midnight of the due date. I am wanting to
encourage you to complete work on time, both to facilitate your collaboration
with other students and to help you complete the course by the end
of the term. We all appreciate the flexibility that online courses
allow, but trust me: getting a week behind is deadly. How do I know
this? :)
You can pace yourself during the week:
- Discussions on Monday.
- Activities on Wednesday.
- Journal on Friday.
Not everyone completes their work during the week. Some folks do
their work on the weekend. I usually correct work as it comes in,
so I don't have everything left until the weekend. However, I do
keep to a weekly schedule, so don't fall behind. I call this structure
with freedom. You can do the
work whenever is convenient to you as long as it is completed within
the week. :-)
The discussions and homework occur in WebBoard.
If you are new to this, it may take some getting used to. This is
where class happens! Here are the directions. You may want to print
this page off as a reference. I will also post this link under
resources, so if you need it later on, you can always get to it easily
under the resource tab at the top of each page.
