How does a campus tutoring session work?

Tutoring sessions are 30 minute appointments and emphasize teaching writing according to your needs and interests ranging from thinking of topics to drafting and revising and editing.  Generally the session will be focused on one or two key writing skills (i.e. coming up with an idea, revising a thesis, development of thesis, punctuation, etc.). Instructors will ask if you have something you want to focus on and help you recognize your writing strengths as well as areas to develop further.  In addition, the tutor may provide handouts and additional writing resources.

How can I get the most out of a campus tutoring session?

Please plan ahead and come prepared.

  • Knowing your assignment requirements and having a copy of it with you will help make the most of your visit. .

  • Having an idea of what you want to focus on (i.e. thesis development, comma splices, etc.) can help make the most of 30 minutes.

  • Visiting the center at least a day  or two in advance of your assignment due date will reduce your frustration and anxiety over revising.

Your assignment sheet: If you don't have an assignment sheet, please be able to describe the assignment and its requirements.

For discussing possible topics: It is not necessary that you have a document to revise.  The faculty will work with you on selecting and brainstorming writing topics.

What kind of help can I expect online?

Currently online tutoring is available for short work or short portions of longer assignments. The tutor will be able to respond to work that is brief enough to be read in about 5-10 minutes. For example, you might submit a thesis statement, a paragraph, an introduction, conclusion, short paper outline, or some other small portion of a paper for feedback from a tutor.  Though tutors do not edit work, they instruct with the goal of helping you read your own work critically.  They provide instructional feedback and often also suggest supplemental materials.

How can I make the most of the online tutoring experience?

You can make the most of your online tutoring experience by
  • Indicating which class you are in and what assignment you are working on.
  • Submitting work that can be easily read in about 5-10 minutes.
  • Informing the tutor about what you want him or her to focus on in the work you have posted.  Please preface your work with a brief note about your writing concerns in the passage you've posted.  For example, if you are concerned with the clarity of your introduction, you might ask the reader to focus on that.  If you are concerned with sentence structure, or paragraph development, or documentation, or phrasing of thesis, or clarity of ideas and discussion, etc. let the tutor know about that.
  • Posting your work in time for you to use the feedback.  It may take up to 24 hours for you to receive feedback from a tutor, so factor that response time into how much time you will need to revise before the assignment's due date.
