Concepts

• Find the igneous rocks classification table in your lab manual.  It is figure 3 in the custom manual or 5.3 in the full manual. Know everything there is to know about that figure.  I will provide it for you on the exam and you will be able to use it as a reference (you will need it). 
  • Some examples of questions I could ask:
    • What is the most common mineral in Granite?
    • List some minerals that would never be associated with olivine?
    • What do basalt and gabbro have in common and how do they differ.
    • Be sure you can give a name to a rock given the texture and mineralogical composition of that rock.
    • List all the phaneritic rocks and then list their aphanitic equivalence of that rock.
    • There are many other questions I can ask and they can ALL be read straight off the table without any memorization as long as you understand how to use the table.
• Why are the oceans primarily composed of basalt, while the continents are largely composed of granite?
• List and define all of the different igneous rock textures
• What do the different igneous rock textures tell you about their cooling history?
• What factors, in addition to heat, control the melting of rocks to generate magma?
• Why is the term "partial melting" used rather than just "melting" when discussing the generation of magma from rock?
• What is meant by igneous rock texture?  Briefly describe each texture and what those textures imply about the formation of the rock.
• Some igneous rocks contain large visible crystals surrounded by microscopically small crystals.  What is the term for these rocks? How does such a texture form?
• What is partial melting and explain how does that process allow the ultramafic rocks of the mantle to ultimately evolve into the felsic rocks found on the continents?
• What is the basic difference between the continuous and discontinuous series of Bowen’s reaction series?
• List all of the different type of igneous rock bodies (ie. sill, dike,...) and describe how they form.
• Briefly discuss the different types of plate tectonic boundaries and the igneous rocks that are associated with them.
